Bindi Irwin is in mourning following the death of one of her animal-loving family’s favourite pets.

Piggy, the clan’s 13-year-old chicken passed away earlier this week after a remarkably long life for a bird of her species.

“For nearly 13 years you made us smile through life’s ups and downs,” Bindi wrote in a snap of the pair, adding “Rest In Peace my lovely girl.”

In response to the emotional post, Bindi’s fiancé Chandler joined in the chorus of support commenting a love heart in support of his partner.

Irwins’ sad loss

Bindi’s brother Robert also penned a tribute of his own on Instagram, telling fans just how much the pet meant to his tight-knit family.

“Saying goodbye to one of our dearest friends. Almost 13 years ago, ‘Piggy’ came into our family and brought so much joy to everyone who knew her over the years,” he wrote.

“I’ve never known a chicken with the character and personality that this hen had, she was one of a kind. We’ll miss you little Pig.”

At 13, it is likely the pet entered the Irwins’ life soon after dad Steve passed away in 2006.

Including her beloved dad

But despite his death over a decade ago, the Crocodile Hunter’s daughter is hoping her father’s presence will be front and centre at her wedding to Chandler next year.

“I really want to include Dad on the day and make sure that he is with us in some way,” Bindi previously told People.

“Just little bits of Dad that will make it feel like he’s there with us.”

She went on to say that her and Chandler are planning to hold a candle lighting ceremony.

“So we’ll be able to all get up as a little family and light a candle in his honour and share a few words on what an amazing dad he was and still is.”
