Today show host Deborah Knight mocked on radio over poor ratings

It hasn’t exactly been an easy transition for Today show co-host Deborah Knight when she took over Karl Stefanovic’s former role alongside Georgie Gardener this year.

The Nine breakfast program has seen its “lowest ratings in 10 years” since the revamped lineup and only making matters worse was Triple M’s, radio host Mick Molloy, who thought it would be fun to taunt Deborah on Wednesday about the show’s decreasing viewers.

After calling in to the Kennedy Molloy radio show yesterday afternoon, Deb graciously played along while Mick continued to make jokes about Today.

“Deborah who have you got on tomorrow, come on let’s see,” he tested her before suggesting he makes a cameo appearance.

“I’d like to do the weather from like hurricanes or something… or an Aerobics Oz Style segment,” he said.

“A bit of lycra with you would go down a treat but I don’t know, we want to boost ratings, Mick, we don’t want them to go down any more, goodness me,” Deb laughed along.

“And the ratings are boosting, and it’s great to see two women fronting a show,” Jane Kennedy chimed in, offering supporting comments and apologies on behalf of her co-host wherever she could.

However Mick didn’t stop there as he said, “Well there’s only one way they can go, which is up isn’t it?”

“Good luck on Postcards Deborah” he added, referring to Nine’s afternoon travel show.

“Stop it,” Deborah responded lightly, while Jane asked that he be more respectful.

“Deborah, I’ve had two shows axed by channel Nine, welcome aboard,” Mick continued, implying that the Today show is heading in the same direction.

Clearly taken aback by how the conversation turned Deb replied with a quiet “Goodness me … goodness me,” before applauding Jane for having to work alongside Mick on a daily basis.

The radio hosts then tried to end things on a good note by encouraging their listeners to tune into Today’s next episode.

But of course, Mick couldn’t help himself and added one last remark which took a dig at veteran entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins: “And if you’re up and about, Richard Wilkins, watch! Tune in!”
