‘Today’ Co-Hosts Divide Fans With Debate About Controversial Movie Theater Etiquette
"Glicked" is here at last—the long-awaited weekend when both Gladiator II and Wicked: Part One hit theaters. While both films have been highly anticipated, there's no denying that Wicked's fan base is particularly excited about the cinematic event—but there's a burning question on the minds of moviegoers everywhere: Is it okay to sing along in the theater?
The co-hosts of the Today Show weighed in on the debate in a clip shared to Instagram on Friday, Nov. 22, but not everybody was of the same mind.
"Unless you are Cynthia or Ariana, there should be no singing in the theater," Craig Melvin declared.

"But then why are you there?" Laura Jarrett interjected. "The whole point is to have a fun, communal experience. Go at home if you want to be silent!"
Savannah Guthrie, however, was on Melvin's side.
"When it comes to singing, there's no place like home," Guthrie said.

Fans shared their own opinions in the comments.
"I’m a classically trained singer who has been to many performances, including musical-movies. It is 💯 rude to sing, unless it’s earmarked as a sing a-long performance," wrote one person.
"It ruins the experience for people who didn’t come so see a show just so they could listen to a bunch of off-key singing. If you wouldn’t sing at a Broadway show (unfortunately, some people even do this and it’s annoying every time), don’t do it at a Broadway movie," they continued.
"It’s super cringe. And it’s the opposite of what she said in the video. YOU go home and sing the musical at home. The audience is there to see professionals do it," the commenter said.
"Nailed it @savannahguthrie 😂," agreed someone else. "Please don’t sing. Don’t do it. Please don’t do it," pleaded another Instagram user.
Others didn't see a problem with viewers belting out their favorite tunes in the theater.
"I say let them sing! We sang during The Eras Tour movie!" argued one music lover. "It’s a musical which def makes it a sing along naturally! Def gotta sing 😂," somebody else chimed in.
"Any other movie and I would agree 💯 but if you truly are in the no sing group, you already don’t get the point of the movie at all. THE THEME OF THE MOVIE IS LITERALLY ABOUT NOT SILENCING THOSE WHO ARE DIFFERENT!!! Also, in these dark times, let’s not take the joy away from the theater kids. Join in! You might actually enjoy yourself!" another passionate Wicked fan suggested.
Thankfully for everyone, sing-along screenings of Wicked will come to select theaters on Christmas Day.
