A Timeline of Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor Gushing Over One Another

The pair met in 2005 and got together a decade later.

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor, each Hollywood legends in their own right, have lived in the spotlight for decades. So, when a 2015 tweet from Taylor suggested they may have gotten together, the world was abuzz. They confirmed their relationship in December of that year, and become a mainstay at awards show red carpets and premieres soon after. Nearly a decade later, they still haven't been able to stop gushing over one another.

Paulson told Chelsea Handler on her podcast, Dear Chelsea, "I think [Holland's] the smartest, wisest, funniest, most extraordinary person I've ever met. So I can't imagine not being with her. I just can't. I just feel very, very lucky to be around someone so incredibly witty and funny and smart and, I think, incredibly sexy."

Although they have put their love on display on dozens of occasions, Paulson and Taylor have made it clear that they block out the media noise. They've opened up about not giving into criticism of their 32-year-age gap, nor their living situation (more on that below). Read ahead for a timeline of their precious relationship.

2005: They meet at a party.

Paulson and Taylor first met at a dinner party in 2005. At the time, the American Horror Story star was dating actress Cherry Jones, while the Legally Blonde star was in a separate relationship of her own. Years later, in 2016, Paulson told The New York Times that Taylor was "the most exquisitely beautiful woman" she'd ever seen.

2015: Holland Taylor shot her shot over DM.

Like the best modern love stories, things turned romantic for the pair after Taylor slid into Paulson's Twitter DMs. Paulson revealed how their relationship advanced while appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in January 2019.

"It's a long story. We met a very, very long time ago. I was with someone else; she was, too," Taylor explained. "We sort of breezed by one another, and then started following each other on Twitter, and then…"

Billy Eichner, who was also a guest that night, asked, "Holland Taylor slid into your DMs?" To which, Paulson responded, "She actually did. Yeah, it's pretty great."

November 17, 2015: They spark relationship rumors.

On November 17, 2015, Taylor shared a photo of Paulson in a glittering gown to Twitter. The snap had fans speculating that they were romantically involved.

November 25, 2015: Holland Taylor reveals she's dating a younger woman.

Taylor threw fans a bone when she shared she was in a relationship with a younger woman during an interview with the radio station WNYC. However, she withheld her secret girlfriend's name.

"There's a very big age difference between us which I'm sure shocks a lot of people, and it startles me. But as they say, 'If she dies, she dies,'" the actress joked.

During the interview, Taylor also opened up about her sexuality for the first time, saying, "I haven't 'come out' because I am out. I live out."

December 1, 2015: They confirm their relationship.

Christmas came early in 2015, as the two gifted their fans confirmation of their coupling. People confirmed that Paulson was indeed the woman Taylor was referring to on the radio, and several sources told the outlet they had been dating for "a couple months."

December 6, 2015: Sarah Paulson gushes over Holland Taylor.

Paulson had nothing but praise for her girlfriend after watching her perform in the off-Broadway production of Ripcord.

"@HollandTaylor You sure are a genius. #favoriteactress," she tweeted, along with a photo of her ticket stub.

December 7, 2015: They make their couple debut.

The pair walked the red carpet together, hand-in-hand, at the opening night of Broadway's School of Rock in New York City. The show served as a date night and the first time they appeared in public together.

January 14, 2016: Sarah Paulson posts a birthday tribute for Holland Taylor.

Paulson had some sweet words for her girlfriend on her 73rd birthday. "Happiest Birthday to @HollandTaylor my most favorite human... No one is more deeply grateful that you were born than I," Paulson wrote on Twitter.

January 17, 2016: They make their awards show debut.

Taylor was the most supportive girlfriend when she stepped out to support Paulson at the 2016 Critics' Choice Awards, where Paulson was nominated for her supporting role in American Horror Story: Hotel.

March 3, 2016: Sarah Paulson opens up about their relationship.

Paulson discussed her relationship with Taylor and her sexuality for the first time ever during an interview with The New York Times.

"If my life choices had to be predicted based on what was expected from me from a community on either side, that's going to make me feel really straitjacketed, and I don't want to feel that," she told the news outlet. "What I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor."

September 18, 2016: Holland Taylor supports Sarah Paulson from afar.

Although Taylor was in New York for her Broadway play The Front Page while Paulson accepted an Emmy award, she still made sure to show her support. Taylor posted a series of Tweets throughout the night dedicated to her sweetheart. Paulson showed her love, too, by saying "...and Holland Taylor, I love you," during her acceptance speech for outstanding actress in a limited series.

January 26, 2017: Holland Taylor opens up about their relationship.

Taylor said Paulson makes her feel like "the luckiest person in the world" while appearing on Radio Andy's Sandyland broadcast.

"I must say it has to be part of what has to be the most wonderful thing in my life, is the whole embrace of this wonderful relationship which makes everything else makes sense," she continued. "I can't talk about my life today and not mention this wonderful love."

January 2, 2018: Sarah Paulson discusses their age gap.

Paulson told Town & Country that she and Taylor ignore criticism of their relationship, including their 32-year age gap.

"I do not want to be defined by who I share my bed, my home, my soul with," Paulson told the outlet. "My choices in life have been unconventional, and that's my business. But I do want to live responsibly and truthfully without hiding. It's complicated, because there is a lot of hate in this world, and a lot of good can come from quote-unquote normalizing something for people who don't see it as normal. Our relationship represents a certain amount of hope and risk. Maybe there's something brave in it. Maybe it encourages others to make brave choices. What else can I say? We love each other."

The Ocean's 8 star previously spoke about her choice of older partners during a 2016 The New York Times interview.

"There's a poignancy to being with someone older," she said. "I think there's a greater appreciation of time and what you have together and what's important, and it can make the little things seem very small."

July 28, 2020: Sarah Paulson celebrates Holland Taylor's Emmy nomination.

Taylor received a nod for her supporting role in Netflix's Hollywood. Paulson showed her support by posting the nomination on her Instagram, along with the caption, "@hollandvtaylor you are the best of the best, in every and all ways. I am over the moon for you. Congratulations my love."

August 19, 2020: Holland Taylor discusses quarantine life with Sarah Paulson.

Taylor opened up about what quarantine life with Paulson in Los Angeles was like during an interview with People. "Both of us normally have to travel for work, have constantly been filming, always leaving a bag halfway packed in the foyer at our house," she said.

She added that although they were spending more time together, they've always felt very close and connected. "Of course, Sarah and I didn't need to be brought closer together. We have a very tight, close relationship within each other's thoughts," Taylor said. "We share everything that's going on."

December 17, 2020: Holland Taylor celebrates Sarah Paulson's birthday.

Taylor gushed about Paulson on her birthday. The Morning Show star posted a photo of her sweetheart to Instagram with the caption, "Yes, but listen—y'all have no idea. Happy Birthday to my one and only. I'm grateful you were born, @mssarahcatharinepaulson."

January 14, 2022: Sarah Paulson posted a birthday tribute for Holland Taylor.

Taylor rang in her 79th birthday alongside Paulson, who posted the sweetest birthday tribute to Instagram. "Love of my life. The one. The only one," she captioned a photo of Taylor. "January 14th is my favorite day of the year-a day to unabashedly celebrate you @hollandvtaylor I am the luckiest of the lucky. I love you only."

April 24, 2022: Sarah Paulson celebrated the end of Holland Taylor's Broadway show.

Paulson was full of pride on the closing night of Broadway's Ann. She made sure to show her admiration for her girlfriend, writing, "I have loved her for 7 years and counting…and tonight, as she brings this production in for its landing, I have never loved her more. She is an artist to the marrow…I happen to love a genius. That's really the truth."

Paulson continued, "To be inspired by the artistry of the person you share your life with, is the most glorious thing in this world. I love you, I admire you, I worship you @hollandvtaylor."

September 12, 2022: They walk the Emmys red carpet.

Paulson and Taylor made a stunning appearance on the 2022 Emmys red carpet.

When asked by E!'s Loni Love how the actress planned on celebrating her eighth nomination, Paulson said, "God, I don't know! I'm here with Holland, my partner, whom I love. And that's it!"

January 14, 2023: Sarah Paulson pens a love letter for Holland Taylor's birthday.

Paulson commemorated Holland turning the big eight-oh with a sweet Instagram tribute, which Taylor called a "moving love letter."

"You are sitting at the counter not 15 feet from me, drinking your chocolate coffee as usual.
I am happiest this way-YOU near," Paulson wrote. "When we talk about what it means to live- what this human experience is all about, we always end up somewhere where you aren't exactly sure if you've contributed enough-if it's mattered."

January 26, 2023: They attend Paris Fashion Week.

The couple coordinated in suits for the Fendi Couture runway show in the City of Love. They posed sweetly, hand-in-hand, for photos.

March 12, 2023: They attend the Vanity Fair Oscars party.

The pair enjoyed a glamorous date night at Vanity Fair's star-studded Oscars afterparty. Paulson stunned in a black sequin gown, while Taylor looked cheerful in a dusty-pink pantsuit.

August 31, 2023: Sarah Paulson praises Holland Taylor.

Paulson gushed over her girlfriend while appearing on Chelsea Handler's Dear Chelsea podcast.

"I think she’s the smartest, wisest, funniest, most extraordinary person I've ever met,” Paulson said. "So I can't imagine not being with her. I just can't. I just feel very, very lucky to be around someone so incredibly witty and funny and smart and, I think, incredibly sexy."

She added that Holland is "the most beautiful woman I've ever seen" and is "constantly reminding me of how capable I am."

November 21, 2023: Sarah Paulson gushes over Holland Taylor again.

The love fest continued when Paulson appeared on The View. "I feel very lucky to be with a person who is smarter, wiser, wittier than I, and that just makes my life better in every possible way," she said. "She also makes me feel seen, which I think is the most important gift you can give to any person."

January 14, 2024: Sarah Paulson commemorates Holland Taylor's birthday.

Paulson posted the sweetest video montage of the two of them to Instagram in honor of Taylor's 81st birthday.

"You are, quite simply-my world. I love you. @hollandvtaylor (don’t be mad about the second to last picture, I didn’t know how to take it out, plus there are pictures of me with no eyebrows, so-)." Paulson wrote.

May 13, 2024: Sarah Paulson reveals their living situation.

The Ratched star revealed on the Smartless podcast that she and Taylor don't live together, even after nearly a decade of dating.

“Yeah, we don’t live together. That’s the secret to it,” Paulson says of her long-lasting romance. “We spend plenty of time together, but we don’t live in the same house.”

She added, "[We've] been together for a long time now. And part of it has to do with, we’re together when we want to be and we’re not when we don’t.”

When hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett suggested they could try living in the same house but have separate rooms, Paulson responded, “No, because my favorite thing to do—we fall asleep holding hands. I like to sleep near her," she says, before joking, "I don’t want to be around her the rest of the time. Just kidding.”

Paulson further explained their arrangement: “Holland, before me, hasn’t been in a ton of long-term relationships, whereas Holland is my third. I tend to do that and have more experience doing that, Holland hasn’t. So to get to be her age and sort of not having really cohabited with someone for a long time—I think it was a lot to sort of have me and all my me-ness in her space.”

August 8, 2024: Holland Taylor reveals where they stand on marriage.

While appearing on Andy Cohen Live, the host asked Taylor if she and Paulson plan on getting married in the future.

"I don't think so," Taylor responded. "We've never talked about it with any interest. It doesn't seem to mean to us what it means to a lot of people...I mean, we have a big generational difference between us, which worries me for her sake. But, you know...what can I do?"

September 15, 2024: They attend the Emmys together.

Paulson and Taylor had a glamorous date night at the 2024 Primetime Emmy awards, the first ceremony where they were both up for a nod.

"Holland has been my absolute rock with me at all of these things for many years, and tonight, I'm the girl who gets to hold her purse," Paulson gushed on the red carpet. "My nomination was last weekend, she's the Primetime Emmy nominee, and I feel very, very honored to be standing here."
