Three things we learnt from the Sephora showcase

Some of Sephora’s biggest brands opened their arms to journalists, beauty bloggers and VIP guests in Sydney today for their Beauty Beats brand showcase.

Stalls were set up to show off the most promising new makeup lines, skin and haircare products, with experts from Australia and around the globe waxing lyrical about their upcoming products.

Here are the top three tips we took away:

You’re probably using applying concealer wrong

Makeup weighs down your skin, which is why using lots of heavy foundation can actually make fine lines and wrinkles appear more prominent. And when it comes to the delicate skin under our eyes – which is up to five times thinner than the skin on the rest of our face – it’s particularly important you don’t cake it on.

Josephine Houlihan, national education trainer at IT Cosmetics, recommends applying the weight of your concealer to the darkest crease under your eyes, and then using a brush to just feather the colour out along the rest of the half-moon from there.

Interestingly, concealers from IT Cosmetics are actually closer to eye creams, just with a touch of colour added. So the idea is that their active ingredients work on lowering the appearance of dark circles while the colour temporarily hides it.

You should be exfoliating your scalp

It may seem farfetched, but just as you exfoliate your face, brands are now encouraging us to exfoliate our scalps.

Using hair products, sprays and dry shampoo on a daily basis can create a build up of excess product on our scalps, and using a gentle exfoliator along with your regular shampoo and conditioner can help clean and refresh your hair.

Ouai uses a sugar and probiotic base in their combined scalp and body scrub so it lathers up, and the sugar then dissolves and easily washes out.

Cactus seed oil is the beauty trend you need to know

We might treat these prickly plants as a piece of the decor, but according to beauty company Starskin, we should actually be putting cactus seed oil all over our face.

Cactus oil, which also goes by the name prickly pear seed oil, is said to be filled with the awesome antioxidant vitamin E and is a meant to provide a burst of moisture to the skin.

From their Pink Cactus Mask to their new Cactus Serum Mist, they recommend lathering up on the super seed if you want skin that’s smooth and moisturised.
