A chic combination of classic meets contemporary, Meghan Markle is a fashion icon of our time.

‘What Meghan wore’ turns up 22 million Google results in 0.54 seconds and the images exude confidence and sartorial grace. No wonder the Duchess of Sussex now has an elegant suite named after her at a luxurious London five-star hotel.

And the Milestone Hotel and Residences is no ordinary luxury hotel. The property’s Meghan Suite is one of 57 rooms, suites and apartments spread over three Kensington townhouses, first opened in 1920.

Impossibly posh, original fineries like carved wooden window frames and over-the-top curtain drapes manifest quintessential Britishness throughout the whole property. One can imagine Queen Lizzie taking afternoon tea in the cosy sitting room with walls enveloped in elaborate fabric and textiles that would cause a fuss from any interior lover.

The Meghan Suite is huge, bigger than most Sydney flats, with a sun-drenched and stunning handmade Savoir bed, surrounded by custom-designed Indian silks. The suite is part of a large-scale renovation of The Milestone with master craftsman, artisans and designers coming together to curate furnishings of antiquity paired with modern art and linens. The result? Refined modern style, much like Meghan’s wardrobe.

The showstopper in the space is an exquisite 18th century ebonized French bureau plat desk and Giacometti-style leather chairs. Through the regal mirrored double doors is an intense black and white marbled bathroom, complete with every bell and whistle on the list including thick robes and iconic Penhaligon’s toiletries — the preferred perfumer of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.

The royal theme doesn’t stop here.

The windows look out at the leafy Kensington Palace, where Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her Prince Charming William, Duke of Cambridge reside — so a glimpse of a real-life princess is not out of the question.

While the Meghan Suite is a special sight, no two rooms are the same at The Milestone. Collections of horse-themed art dots the walls (a nod to the property’s equestrian theme) and service is almost psychic. Hot tip: order the included breakfast to your room, check-out is not until 1pm so guests can lap up the luxury for an extended time.

The Milestone collects awards in droves, many for its outstanding service. Before arrival guests receive a questionnaire via email offering everything from a lift from the airport (in a Bently!) to a freshly baked ‘occasion cake’ and what kind of pillow and duvet is preferred. Your stay is customised to the extreme — there is a fruit platter and specially printed business cards with guests’ names and the hotel’s address waiting in your room.

Overwhelming is one way to put it. But for those who like the finer things in life, this ‘treat-yo-self’ experience is worth every penny.

The cherry on the cake? Taking a seat at the window in the Victorian sitting room for an indulgent afternoon tea. Champagne flows while a waiter explains the line-up of fancy patisserie items and guests fall in love with the world’s best chicken sandwich.

With the neighbourhood as splendid as it is lavish with its hydrangea-lined streets and whitewashed mansions, the old-world charm of South Kensington and its Milestone is like a glamorous time warp.

You’ll come for the typical English-isms, but you’ll come back for the take-your-breath-away uniqueness.
