As this year’s The Voice reaches its final rounds, the show’s celebrity coaches have been forced to send some of their most popular contestants packing.

The latest was pregnant songstress Rebecca Selley, who was eliminated just one episode before the coveted live shows are set to start, and fans are not impressed.

Surprise pick

Instead of Rebecca, coach Kelly Rowland chose to advance rapper Denzel - who last week made headlines for being allowed to perform an original song.

The move was one which left fans in shock, with some claiming the Destiny’s Child star had lost her top contestant.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed with a decision, Rebecca deserved a spot,” tweeted one viewer.

“How on EARTH can you not take Rebecca though??? Best vocalist on your team, Kelly, by a long, long way.

“Team Kelly truly lost their top voice out of four tonight,” wrote another.

“Big big mistake!!!!!!! How can you let Rebecca go.... over who!??? Denzel!?? Big mistake!”

Fan confusion

The fact that Kelly had such an emotional response to Rebecca’s performance also left viewers confused as to why she was so suddenly booted.

“Rebecca represents women everywhere who are like, I can have the baby and I can work too. I can have the baby and bring home the bacon,” Kelly said through tears.

“It's so real out here. I cant believe I am going to cry.”

Despite becoming so visibly affected by Rebecca’s soulful rendition of Beyonce’s Ave Maria, she’s not the first judge to ignore her emotions when choosing who to advance.

Not the first time

Delta Goodrem was famously forced to leave the stage last week when she broke down following The Koi Boys’ performance, which they dedicated to the Christchurch mosque shooting victims.

Although the rendition was among the most memorable of the series, it wasn’t enough to sail them through to the next round.

Instead, Delta chose to advance Daniel Shaw from The Battle rounds, saying he ‘needs me more right now’.

Kelly’s reasoning for her surprise pick was a similar one, telling the packed studio audience that 20-year-old Denzel had ‘growing to do and needs [her] as a coach'.
