Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have paid tribute to Prince Phillip when naming the newest member of the royal family.

Instead of inheriting an earldom as expected, the couple have decided their son will be known as Archie Mountbatten-Windsor - a surname directly inherited from his great-grandfather.

Although this is typical for most, the royals’ family name is something Prince Philip had to fight to be a part of.

When his wife became Queen in 1952, she decided the family’s name would remain as Windsor and not incorporate Mountbatten - the surname Philip had been using up until that point.

The move was one which annoyed the Prince, who felt he had already foregone so much being married a monarch, to the point he referred to himself as "a bloody amoeba".

“I am the only man in the country not allowed to give his name to his children,” he reportedly told friends at the time.

However in 1960, the Queen budged and declared her and Prince Philip’s direct descendants were to be distinguished from the rest of the royals by taking on the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

The decision came with compromise as the new double-barrel name would not apply to prince or princesses or descendants related through a female line.

This has so far ruled out all of the couple’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who either have official titles or are descended through Princess Anne and her ex-husband Mark Phillips, and have instead taken his name.

Prince Edward’s children Lady Louise and James, typically use Windsor or James’ subsidiary title Viscount Severn in lieu of Mountbatten-Windsor.

Similarly, Prince George and Princes Charlotte are believed to use Cambridge at school and for other day-to-day practicalities.

This means baby Archie will be the first descendant of Prince Philip and the Queen to bear the name he fought so hard to create, and acts as the ultimate tribute, according to royal author Penny Junor.

"I would think the Duke of Edinburgh would be absolutely thrilled with that," she told AP.

"Archie is a lovely name, but the fact that they've chosen to call him Mountbatten-Windsor...I think that's a really nice tribute to Harry's grandfather."
