After spending a decade at The Project’s helm, Carrie Bickmore is now one of Australian television’s most-loved faces.

But the presenter wasn’t always so sure of her skill set and in fact once feared her career was over before it had ever even taken off.

Humble beginnings

“I still remember our first episode — it was terrible,” Carrie revealed in her most recent Logie’s acceptance speech.

“[Dave] Hughesy remarked at the end of it that was his career done. I remember thinking, s**t, if that is what Hughesy is saying I have no hope.”

Ahead of the show’s tenth anniversary celebrations this Friday, the mother-of-three told news.com.au about how she’s reflecting on the mammoth milestone.

“Oh, mate. I’m not game enough to watch it back,” she said.

“I wasn’t even convinced that our hosts knew what it was when we went to air.

“I don’t think it was great. I think all of us were happy to get to night two and surprised we were given another night. To be here 10 years later is really cool.”

Offscreen achievements

In addition to refining her presenting chops over the past decade, Carrie’s also been very busy offscreen.

After taking home the Gold Logie in 2015, she used her speech to point the spotlight of brain cancer, the disease which killed her husband Greg in 2010.

Following this Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer was founded, in a bid to find the killer disease’s cure.

And while the veteran host is now a truly seasoned professional, she still isn’t immune to slip ups.

Just yesterday, she suffered a bit of a slight on-air blunder after making an awkward gaffe during Orange is The New Black star Yael Stone’s interview.
