Queen Maxima has given a heartbreaking speech after the tragic death of her sister earlier this month.
Inés Zorreguieta was just 33-years-old when she is reported to have died by suicide in her apartment in Buenos Aires on June 6.
Speaking after a visit to a hospital in Groningen yesterday, Queen Maxima said that she was glad to be back at work because the hospital ‘means so much to people with cancer’.
“People who are sick, yet who hope for a cure,” the queen started her speech.
“My dear, talented younger sister Inés was ill too.
“She couldn’t find joy and couldn’t recover.”
Queen Maxima went on to say that the only consolation was that she ‘has now finally been able to find peace’.
“I would like to say how very grateful we are for the countless letters, messages and tokens of sympathy that we have received.
“They have really helped us. I’d also like to say thank you for the respect that everyone has shown my family in this very dark period. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Just last week, Queen Maxima’s husband, King William-Alexander, said he didn’t want his wife to ‘fall into a black hole’ after the death of her sister.
“Of course, it’s a shame when your buddy isn’t here but she has good reason not be here,” he is said to have told Royal Central.
“I am constantly in touch with her and with the children as well, because they are home alone.
“They have support, of course, but I wanted to be sure that they wouldn’t fall into a black hole after visiting Buenos Aires.”
Inés had a very close relationship with both her sister and her brother-in-law.
She acted as a bridesmaid for her sister back in 2002, when she married into the royal family.
She is also godmother to the couple’s youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.
It was previously reported that Inés, who was working for the Ministry of Social Development, had been suffering from depression and was seeking out help at a clinic in Buenos Aires.
