'I'm furious': School teacher's shocking quiz show response blasted

We’ve all had an embarrassing moment of misinformation at some point in our lives.

Maybe you asked a woman when she was due only to be told she wasn’t expecting. Perhaps you confidently named the wrong person as our current prime minister at a dinner party.

Well, unless you mixed up some very, very basic geography on national television to the shock and horror of watchers you’ve probably never had a brain fart quite like the one that unfolded on UK quiz show The Chase on Monday evening.

A schoolteacher by the name of Hannah sparked a furious backlash after her jaw-dropping incorrect answer to one of the show’s questions caught the attention of several thousand viewers.

"What Caribbean country is the athlete Asafa Powell from?" was the question which may seem obvious to some, the athlete hails from Jamaica, but which you could be forgiven for passing over were you not a sports enthusiast.

What could not be forgiven however was the ‘country’ Hannah opted for.

“Africa,” she responded.

Though the teacher’s face immediately betrayed her horror at the response, it was too late to correct as the quick-fire round moved forward.

Viewers furious over major mistake

Viewers did not move on quite so quickly, taking to Twitter with their outrage over the response coming from an educator.

Many dubbed the response ‘racist’, as the answer implied both that the athlete must come from Africa, and that the wildly varied continent can be lumped into one homogenous country and culture.

Many were ‘furious’ over the misstep, some reporting they ‘screamed’.

Other pointed out the teacher may have simply choked under the quick-fire round pressure, but it wasn’t an excuse that many went in for.

It’s not the first time someone has been caught out on camera.

Last week a Spanish TV presenter was busted with a woman who wasn’t his girlfriend semi-clad in his apartment during a live segment.

Similarly, The Bachelor’s Locky Gilbert was busted in the background of MAFS Aleks Markovic’s live Instagram video, despite being on hiatus from filming the dating series.
