Teacher recounts the hilarious thing she had to explain to her deaf students

Every once in a while there comes a time where teachers find themselves educating their students on topics that don’t exactly fit the curriculum.

And first-grade teacher Anna Trupiano experienced just that when she had to explain to her deaf students that people can, in fact, hear farts.

Teaching at a school that caters to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students from birth through eighth grade, Ms Trupiano has an added responsibility to help her students thrive in society as best as they can.

So one day when one of her six-year-old students – who didn’t know passing gas made noise – farted so loud in class that some of their classmates began to laugh Ms Trupiano found herself in a bit of a stinky situation having to explain why others were laughing.

However for Ms Trupiano the humorous classroom moment too good not to share so she posted to Facebook, “a snippet of a 15-minute conversation that happened entirely in American sign language among the group of deaf students and [herself]”.

This is how it went down:

Kid 1: Why are they looking at me?
Teacher: Because they heard you fart.
Kid 1: Whhhhat do you mean?!?!
Teacher: Hearing people can hear farts.

Kid 2: *Totally horrified* Wait, they can hear all farts?!?!
Teacher: Well no. Not all farts but some of them yes.
Kid 3: How do you know which farts they can hear and which farts they can’t?
Teacher: Hmmm…you know how sometimes you can feel your butt move when you fart? A lot of those they can hear. But if your butt doesn’t move it’s more likely they didn’t hear it.
Kid 1: TELL THEM TO STOP LISTENING TO MY FARTS! THAT IS NOT NICE!
Teacher: Hearing kids can’t stop hearing farts, it just happens.
Kid 2: I just will stop farting then.
Teacher: Everyone farts, it is healthy. You can’t stop.
Kid 3: Wait. Everyone? Even my mom?

Teacher: Yep.
Kid 2: My dad?
Teacher: Yep.
Kid 1: ……You?
Teacher: Yep.
Kids: *Laugh hysterically*

Kid 1: …So you can hear and smell all the farts?
Teacher: Some of the farts yes. Not all of them.
Kid 2: Can hearing people see farts?
Kid 3: Yeah. Green smoke comes out of their butt, I saw it on TV.
Teacher: That doesn’t happen in real life.
Kid 1: What?! Ugh. I don’t understand farts.

“……I went to college for 8 years to have these conversations,” Anne wrote at the end of her post.

Ms Trupiano couldn’t believe her post gained so much attention as she later posted, “I guess it turns out farts are pretty universally funny.”

“Thanks for so much love on this post, I am so incredibly privileged to be a part of these students lives and this is just such a reminder of how lucky I am!”

The simple post gained so much attention that it brought to light what Ms Trupiano believes is the ‘real issue’ that “many deaf students aren’t able to learn about these things at home or from their peers because they don’t have the same linguistic access,” she told GOOD.

She now hopes her funny story will inspire others to interact more with the deaf community saying, “You cannot imagine what an impact it makes, and now is a great time to start learning!”
