TCU takes safety as time expires, resulting in brutally bad beat for under bettors

Another week, another bad beat in a TCU game.

Leading No. 9 Texas 33-29 with just six seconds remaining, TCU decided to keep its offense on the field instead of punting it away to Texas. The Horned Frogs were backed up deep in their own territory, so head coach Gary Patterson figured that Max Duggan could just run around and through the back of the end zone for a safety, taking the remaining time off the clock in the process.

Duggan did just that, and it was a brutal turn of events for some bettors. You see, the total in the game closed at 62.5 on BetMGM. When the game was 33-29, that adds up to 62 points — a half-point under the total. But when Duggan took the safety, it pushed to 64 and instead went over.

If you bet the under, that has to be one of the worst beats you’ve ever suffered. If you were on the over, you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum. Pure elation.

Second straight bad beat in TCU game

Last week against Iowa State, TCU scored a meaningless 31-yard touchdown with no time left on the clock to lose 37-34 instead of 37-28. The point spread in the game closed at Iowa State -3.5 on BetMGM, so if you bet on the Cyclones to cover the spread at that number, that touchdown — which shrunk ISU’s lead from nine to three — was an absolutely brutal backdoor cover.

But the drama did not end there. The spread was Iowa State -2.5 throughout the week, so if TCU decided to kick the extra point you were in for a world of hurt if you wagered on ISU at that number. Instead, TCU coach Gary Patterson decided that there was no point in sending his kicker out there since it would not affect the game’s outcome.

It could have easily been 37-35, but the three-point margin remained without the extra point. If you had the Cyclones at -2.5, you were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief. If you were on TCU +2.5, well, you know the rest. Just brutal.
