TCU coach Gary Patterson working with recording artist on an album

Longtime TCU coach Gary Patterson, like the rest of the college football world, is working to prepare for the upcoming season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus outbreak, however, has significantly altered offseason plans — putting practices, workouts and traditional recruiting on hold.

So with all his free time, Patterson has turned to an old passion: Songwriting.

The 60-year-old is currently working with a recording artist to make an album, he told reporters on a conference call on Tuesday.

“I used to write music when I was younger,” Patterson said, via ESPN. “I actually sent somebody some of my music and somebody’s going to record it.”

Patterson has led the Horned Frogs since 2000, and compiled an impressive 172-70 record in Fort Worth while earning four Mountain West titles and one Big 12 title. He is the second longest-tenured coach in college football, behind only Kirk Ferentz — who has led Iowa since 1999.

Patterson didn’t give up many details about the project, and declined to say which recording artist he’s working with. He did, though, say he’s written about 15 songs over the past 30 years.

While some of his songs needed to be rewritten and updated a bit, Patterson is really happy with how it’s coming together.

“I’ve always wanted to be able to do it,” Patterson said, via ESPN. “They’ve already been in the studio, they’ve already put it on the tracks, and we’re going forward. That’s something that I never thought I’d get to do because I always stayed so busy.

“You might be really surprised when we get done with this. The guy that helped [rewrite] it, he put it in the modern age. If it hits No. 1, I’m gonna make all you guys all go out to some country place and you’re all going to have to dance to it.”
