They’re equal parts sexy and practical.
Some boots are really made for walking, as in comfy boots that can withstand thousands of steps (like Uggs, which are super comfy, and I've actually walked around all of NYC in them), but also sexy boots that are designed to be strut, strut, strut in.
Taylor Swift just wore an example of the latter. The singer, who’s been out and about like it’s nobody’s business, wore a fall-perfect look that’s equal parts sexy and cute, a combo she tends to nail. She stepped out for an NYC evening wearing a pleated, checkered mini skirt (an autumnal classic), which she paired with a fitted black long-sleeve top that she tucked into the bottom. She accessorized with a super-thin black belt (proof that a black belt is still the one classic accessory every outfit can benefit from!), a black top-handle chain bag, and last but certainly not least, those in-your-face over-the-knee leather boots that have dominatrix vibes written all over them.
Fall is, obviously, the time of year we see boots crop up like clockworks. Uggs! Combat boots! Cowboy boots! Black knee-high boots! The style goes on and on — but there is something inherently sexy yet practical about Swift’s over-the-knee pick, which is a style that’s also been seen on Amal Clooney. If you’re wearing a shorter hemline, the thigh-high silhouette enables you to forgo tights altogether. That’s because they provide ample leg coverage (duh!) and thus, warmth — practical, see?

Aside from the practical aspect, there’s no denying that there’s something ultra-appealing about the extremely high boot style. Think: If Swift wore that exact outfit with a pair of ankle combat boots, the outfit would read totally different, more easygoing. But the leggy footwear instantly adds flair to the simple two-piece look, proving that when the hemline is shorter, it’s best to go with a taller boot. It’s a juxtaposition that just works.
What’s more, the fall/winter 2023 runways were packed with the über high style, with designers like Bottega Veneta, Isabel Marant, Khaite, Loewe, and Proenza Schouler showcasing just how to strut your stuff in the over-the-knee silhouette. As expected, the boot is now taking over the streets, so prepare to see a lot more of the dominatrix-inspired footwear.
