A Sweet 'Hacks' Reunion Happened During Last Night’s 'SNL' 50 Premiere

It looks like a cute tradition from Saturday Night Live Season 49 is being carried over for the NBC franchise’s big fiftieth season, if last night’s premiere episode hosted by Hacks star Jean Smart is any proof.

Last season added a bit of extra starry excitement each week by having surprise celebrity cameos throughout the episodes, especially in that bit where they announce the live performances from that week’s musical guest. For example, during the season 49 premiere hosted by Pete Davidson, pop legend Taylor Swift shocked the crowd by showing up to introduce Ice Spice's performance of "Pretty Girl." Just a few weeks later, Lady Gaga herself made an appearance during the Bad Bunny-hosted episode to announce the King of Latin Trap’s performance of “UN PREVIEW.” And last December, Barbie director Greta Gerwig dropped in to present musical guest Billie Eilish's performance of "What Was I Made For" from the film's soundtrack.

And last night’s cameo was equally exciting, especially if you’re a fan of the Max comedy Hacks, which recently dominated at the Emmy Awards, taking home gold for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Lead Actress for Jean Smart’s performance of Deborah Vance. While introducing the first performance by musical guest Jelly Roll, the country crooner performed “Liar," Smart was joined by her Hacks’ screen partner Hannah Einbinder, who plays comedy writer Ava Daniels on the series. The co-stars adorably shared a hug while getting the audience amped up for Jelly Roll’s first musical number of the night.

And fun fact: Einbinder has real SNL roots. Her mother, Laraine Newman, was part of the original cast of Saturday Night Live, appearing on the program from its inception in 1975 through 1980. Einbinder’s father is actor-writer-director Chad Einbinder.
