Survivor 48 Premiere: Jeff Probst Talks [Spoiler]’s Biggest Mistake, Offers Advice to Future Players — Watch
The following contains spoilers from Wednesday’s season premiere of Survivor 48.
Two challenge losses isn’t the best way to kick-start a Survivor season, but that was the Vula tribe’s fate in the season premiere of Survivor 48.

The team in green struggled to pull things together in Episode 1, with some castaways harboring different opinions on how the game’s first three days should be played. While idol-finder Sai clocked Vula as a bunch of (:::checks notes:::) “hoochie mamas” who were too busy playing the “get to know you game,” things took a slight upturn after the tribe recouped its supplies and got its first fire going. But while Sai was hitting the ground running, scrambling for the idol and forging fast alliances, “hard-hitting business lady” Stephanie worked more casually, trying to build strong foundations via authentic conversations.
But after volunteering for the immunity challenge puzzle and failing to deliver the W, no amount of apologizing could’ve prevented her from becoming the season’s first boot, and not even a Shot in the Dark could keep her torch lit.
When host Jeff Probst stopped by our TVLine studio Monday, we asked him for his take on what went wrong and whether Steph could’ve done anything to save her game at Tribal Council.
“Stephanie is a great example of why Survivor is extremely difficult to win, because she’s a leader,” Probst tells TVLine. “She’s in charge of a lot of people. She gets in this game and decides for a minute, ‘I’m just going to sit on my hands and kind of see what happens.’ Her hands never came out from under her butt. It happened too fast. Is she a bad player? No! She read the room, [made] a choice, it didn’t work out. Put her on another tribe, she’s Final 3, who knows… Stephanie tried to get a pulse and hers was gone by the time it was over.”
In the video above, Probst also revealed some useful advice for future players of the game. Press PLAY to hear the rest of what the Survivor emcee had to say, then tell us: Were you surprised by Stephanie’s early exit? Grade the episode below, then light up the comments!
