Superman & Lois EPs Considered Introducing Lois’ Estranged Mother — Here’s Why They Didn’t

Of the many villainous characters featured during Superman & Lois‘ four-season run, there’s one oft-mentioned individual that will sadly go unseen before the series finale: Mrs. Lane.

Plenty of smack has been talked about Lois’ mother over the years, particularly in Season 2, when Ally Allston (remember her?!) used Lucy’s mommy issues to lure her into a cult. She’s mentioned again briefly this Monday (The CW, 8/7c), making us wonder if there was ever a plan to introduce the woman who had such a profound impact — albeit an extremely negative one — on Lois’ life?

The answer is more complicated than you might expect. As it turns out, several flashbacks featuring Lois’ mother were filmed at the beginning of Season 2, but they all ended up on the cutting room floor.

“It felt a little like, ‘Who is this person?'” co-showrunner Todd Helbing tells TVLine. “And we weren’t sure if we were ever going to tell that story, so we didn’t want to tee something up and not pay it off, which is why we cut it from the episode.”

Helbing acknowledges, “If we had seven seasons, we probably would have explored it a little bit, because we talked about it many times in the room. With this season, it just wasn’t going to play out that way.”

Bitsie Tulloch is also disappointed that Lois’ mother didn’t get a full arc on the show, telling TVLine that their relationship “would have been pretty damn fascinating to explore,” if only they had the time.
