Style Notes: Katie Holmes steps out in a studded denim coat
It's official: there's no such thing as too much denim. The renaissance of the utilitarian textile in all its forms — brought back in the form of a cowboy suit by Beyoncé, a Y2K skort by Taylor Swift, and in a '90s midi skirt by Gisele Bündchen — has led us here, to Katie Holmes’ statement-making denim trench coat.
The actress stepped out this week in New York City in a look that was true to her minimalist style, but sprinkled with wildly interesting staples. The standout piece, of course, was the trench: a double-breasted Chloé coat with a vintage finish, notched collar and long belt, plus silver buttons and eyelet studs all over.
At one point, the piece retailed for $5,555 (approximately £4,350), but it now seems to be sold out everywhere. Chloé does, however, produce a non-studded version of the trench, available at various retailers and currently on sale at The Outnet and MyTheresa.
The reason the look works is that Holmes let her outerwear take centre stage, layering the unique trench over a combination of neutral separates, all of which complement the coat, rather than compete with it. Underneath she wore a classic black scoop-neck top and loose black trousers, adding a pair of glossy black Mary Jane ballet flats. These had a thick strap at the top and a pretty little bow at the front of the rounded toe.
The Rare Objects director finished the ensemble with three of her favourite staple accessories: Mansur Gavriel’s spacious Everyday Soft Tote in black with a red inner lining, rectangular black sunglasses, and her silver nose ring. She also added a dainty gold necklace.
