Student suspended over off-shoulder top

When high school student Summer picked a baggy green top to wear to school last week, little did she know it would see her being threatened with arrest and suspended for 10 days.

The Hickory Ridge High School student from North Carolina has had her story go viral after it was revealed principal Michelle Cline approached her at lunch, telling the teen her top violated dress codes by exposing her shoulders and back.

The school report claims honour roll student Summer responded saying, "I think my shirt is fine."

Summer then borrowed a jacket from a friend, but claims her principal was adamant her lower back was still exposed – and wanted her to change.

“I completely understand why a dress code is put into place but I feel like after I put on that jacket it should have been subdued,” Summer told KENS-5.

Things then escalated when Summer stayed in her seat, and requested her mum be called.

According to reports, a number of issues between the student and her principal over the years had seen Summer’s mum request this be the case.

With the teen’s mum uncontactable, principal Cline then enlisted the help of School Resource Officers (SROs).

"[The SRO] was within five feet of me, he had his hand on his gun,” Summer told KENS-5. “[The principal] said 'I'm gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you."

Summer’s mum finally called back before things got too out of hand, however the student was then suspended for 10 days, banned from attending her own graduation and is now facing the threat of expulsion.

"It's just sad because I worked so hard for four years to walk across that stage," Summer says. "We have drug dealers walking across that stage, we have sex offenders walking across that stage and then the 4.4 student who showed her shoulders can't."

KENS-5 contacted the school for comment, which they refused due to student privacy. However they did reinforce the dress code specifically bans students from wearing off-shoulder tops.
