Steve Irwin didn't initially want kids with Terri

Bindi and Robert may be the apple of their mother’s eye, but according to 54-year-old Terri Irwin, kids weren’t always on the cards for her and late husband, Steve.

Terri, who has carried on ‘The Crocodile Hunter’s’ legacy since he passed away in 2006, said the couple were actually married for six years before they even contemplated expanding their family.

The pair tied the knot in 1992, and welcomed Bindi into the world in 1998 and five years later, in 2003, their son, Robert, was born.

“When we got married, Steve said, ‘I’m just an action man. I don’t know how we would ever have kids’. And I didn’t feel strongly one way or another,” Terri told Who magazine.

“But after almost six years of marriage, he burst through the doors one evening and said, ‘We’ve got to have children! Who do we leave all this to? Who will carry it on?’

“‘I go, ‘Just because you have kids doesn’t mean they’re going to want to do what you do.’ and he said ‘Oh, they will’. They definitely will’.”

And Steve was right, as Bindi and Robert have continued on his mission to bring awareness to threatened or endangered animals at Australia Zoo in Queensland.

Steve tragically passed away at 44-years-old in 2006, after being stung by a stingray while filming a documentary in Queensland.

Terri, Bindi and Robert have made sure his legacy lives on as they continue to share their love of wildlife with all of Australia and the whole world.

“We carry on as though he were still here and we treasure everything he stood for and carrying on with his important legacy,” Terri told Sunrise last year.

“I think it is true of anybody is great journey, you do have a choice, you can kind of curl up in the corner or do what you would have wanted you to be healthy and happy and carrying on with what you are passionate about,” she added.

“Conservation work really is and what we do, is really more who we are. I am proud to be carrying on where Steve left off and I do miss him every day. Today is a wonderful celebration and I am really enjoying it.”
