Son 'kills mum, buries her in woods before throwing party'

A man who allegedly killed his mum when she demanded he start to repay a loan she took out for him threw a huge party in the house after burying her body in the woods.

Batuhan Unal, 21, had reportedly argued again with his mother about the debt and allegedly took a hammer and hit her over the head at the family home.

He then allegedly buried her in a forested area in the north-eastern Turkish city Istanbul's Arnavutkoy district.

Unal was questioned when mushroom pickers discovered the body of Melahat Isbir, 39, in the forest and raised the alarm with police.

He allegedly carried the body there together with a friend identified as Furkan Salih Gurek.

It is further alleged he confessed to hitting her.

Unal has now appeared before a judge for the first time to be remanded in custody.

He claimed he had been shocked at going home and finding his mother with a man, and he had hit her when they argued about it.

“The claim that my sister had a relationship with someone is not true. My nephew was in debt. He forced his mother to take out a loan to get rid of his debt,” the brother of the alleged victim, Fatih Isbir, said.

“There were endless fights about it."

Mr Isbir said he was horrified the boy had been so unbothered by what he had done that he even threw a party at the now-empty house after the alleged murder.

“My nephew had a party with his friends in the house where he killed my sister three days after the incident and shared the images about it on social media,” Mr Isbir said.

The accused killer faces aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "deliberately killing a close relative" while the other defendant, Furkan Salih Gürek, is facing between 15 and 20 years in prison for “aiding and abetting in the committing of a crime”.

The case continues while the defendants are in custody.
