SNL Premiere Promo: Jean Smart Looks Back at 50 Years of SNL History (And Gets Annoyed By It, Too)

Saturday Night Live is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, which is getting a lot of attention… but Jean Smart would like to reserve some of that attention for herself, please.

The Emmy-winning Hacks star is hosting SNL’s Season 50 premiere this week, and in a new promo released on Wednesday (watch it above), Smart takes a nostalgic stroll through the hallowed halls of Studio 8H, marveling at the show’s history as we see classic SNL clips of Steve Martin hosting and Dan Aykroyd playing Julia Child.

But as the clips begin to pile up, Smart starts to get annoyed: “You’re not actually going to show a clip from every season…” She’s cut off, though, by even more clips of Chris Farley crashing through a table as motivational speaker Matt Foley, Adam Sandler playing guitar on Weekend Update… yeah, there’s a lot of history here to get through.

Smart finally tells them to knock it off already: “Can we make this a little bit more about me?” But they’ve run out of time already, and she doesn’t even get to fully introduce her episode. There are just too many great clips to show!

SNL’s season premiere, with Smart as host and Jelly Roll as musical guest, airs this Saturday at 11:30 pm ET/8:30 pm PT on NBC. Press PLAY above to see Smart’s walk down memory lane, and then hit the comments to tell us what you’re hoping to see in the premiere.
