The sleek Scandi-styled cruise that is an adults only haven

Say hello to the no-fuss Nordic cruise line that will bring out the old soul in any traveller: The Viking Orion.

While taking port in Sydney, during it’s new Australia and New Zealand route, Yahoo Lifestyle was welcomed aboard the ocean cruiser to truly uncover what is this so-called ‘Viking difference’ – and we have to say, we walked away feeling pretty impressed.

We’ll start off by saying, if travel on cruises purely for the fanfare of buffets, entertainment, bingo and casinos, theme nights and water slides, well… this one isn’t for you.

But if your journey is more about uncovering the destinations on your itinerary, relaxing as you sail at sea and wining and dining in tasteful restaurants on board, well Viking Cruises caters to exactly that.

Signature to this cruise line is the sleek Scandinavian décor complete with reindeer furs, fireplaces in the hallways and a canopy of trellised wood that is a tribute to its Nordic influence.

And this influence isn’t just in the design but also the experience. The onboard spa – which, looks heavenly, might we add, – is fitted with a steam room, sauna and even an ice cold snow grotto to encourage passengers to try out the Scandinavian bathing ritual of going from hot to cold for a therapeutic and invigorating experience.

Adding the unique experiences we never thought we would see at sea, the Viking Orion is fitted with an infinity pool flowing off its back deck, and as the name suggests, carries links to space and astronomy all throughout the ship including an onboard planetarium theatre and astrologist.

With the opportunity to learn from documentaries, engage in Ted-talks or read one of the abundances of books from the onboard library, this is a dream for travellers who like to come away from their holiday feeling enriched in knowledge and culture.

But perhaps one of the things we appreciated most from this offering compared to other cruise lines is their commitment not to upsell.

“We’re not about raising revenue once you’re on board,” managing director Michelle Black confirmed, saying almost everything is already included in the package price you pay at the start – with the exclusion of onboard shopping or specialised beauty treatments of course.
