Six Game of Thrones theories you won't be able to escape

This is a deep dive into the best of the Game of Thrones fan theories.

If that wasn’t clear enough: SPOILERS AHEAD DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANNA KNOW.

We’re deep in the shivering winter of Game of Thrones season 8, and it’s about to go down in the Battle of Winterfell.

Theories have the raging for years about how the ruler of Weteros will be decided, and we’re closer than ever to the answer.

On the eve of the battle between the living and the dead, we’re revisiting some of the best fan theories to date, though knowing this series what’s coming will probably surprise us all.

1. The Night King isn’t coming to Winterfell… he’s on his way to King’s Landing

A theory with more gravitas than most, eagle-eyed viewers were quick to notice a glaring absence from this line up at the end of last week’s episode:

Despite Bran’s grand plans for a classic bait and switch, this popular theory argues the Night King will skip the Northern party all together.

Under this theory the Night Kingleaves his army to destroy Winterfell, and rides Viserion straight into Kings Landing, raising the ample amount of dead left from years of civil war along the way and takes the Iron Throne from Cersei.

From there it’s a quick swivel to face an either defeated or depleted Northern army.

This means even if the living do hold Winterfell, they will lose the Iron Throne, and Cersei could be on a much shorter timeline than many think.

2. Bran is the night king

This mind bending theory is perhaps the most frustratingly possible of them all.

Reposted to Reddit the theory argues that after the battle is inevitably lost, “Brandon Stark, son of Eddard Stark, decides he’ll travel back in time and try to stop the Night king, his army, and the events from taking place.”

Under the theory Bran will travel back to the creation of the Night King, but will warg into the original man, thus becoming the Night King and trapping himself in a continuous time loop a la Hodor.

Head hurt? Mine too. Let’s hope not.

3. That the final battle will be between the living not the dead

Could the all-consuming threat of the dead be knocked over in one battle? According to this theory, yes.

Some are arguing the battle for Winterfell will be a glowing success and the Northern forces will then turn to face Cersei’s elephant-less army which they will easily crush.

Everyone will live happily ever after and the biggest issue they’ll have to resolve is how to sort out the whole aunty-nephew lover situation to make it more palatable to a modern audience.

Nice, but this is Game of Thrones so don’t kid yourselves.

4. Arya’s next face could help her kill the Night King

The going theory around Arya AKA saucy minx of Winterfell, is that she will take the face of a wight and use it to get close enough to kill the Night King with the special sword Gendry/ basement lover made her.

There’s a few holes here, granted, but it’s my personal favourite.

5. The Crypt is not as safe as they keep loudly telling us.

This is more a given than a theory, but indulge me here.

We keep being told in no uncertain terms that the crypt is very safe for children and women, thank you very much, nothing to see here, just very safe people being safe!

This essentially guarantees that the crypt is not safe, and there will be some decomposing Starks joining the army of the dead shortly.

If a wayward White Walker makes his way in to the crypt to raise some dead, Jon Snow could be forced to do battle with his dead mother Lyanna who is lying in wait.

That would be a plot twist that might even make me forgive that stupid magic carpet scene.

6. Daenerys is dead… and possibly undead

That’s right this rumour has it Daenerys Targaryen is on the chopping block, and could even become a White Walker.

This season 2 dream sequence shows Dany called away from the Iron Throne by the sounds of her dragons, into a winter wasteland.

In the full clip Dany finds Karl Drogo and her son but she chooses to leave them to find her dragons.

Essentially some argues the sequence shows Dany walking away from the throne, facing death (the afterlife with her family), and then choosing another path which could only be her fate as a white walker.

As this theorist sums up all this foreshadowing means the Night King gets to her dragons and in their words: “I believe the Night King is after Dany to be his new Queen. She’ll agree, so she can be with her dragons again.”

It remains to be seen if Dany will still be with Jon as a White Walker, will be slain or slay her lover, or will end up ruling with the Night King.

Yikes, won’t be long until everything becomes abundantly clear.

Until then, my money’s on Arya because she’s a boss.
