'Shrek 5' Teaser Trailer Gets Livid Response From Fans
Fans of the Shrek franchise were stunned by the first teaser for the upcoming Shrek 5 film—but maybe not in a good way.
The first look was released on Wednesday, Feb. 27 as a cast announcement, with the short clip showing Shrek, Fiona and Donkey asking the Magic Mirror an important question.
"Magic mirror, who is the fairest of them all?" asked Donkey, with the mirror responding, "Why Shrek, of course," before showing a couple of clips of Shrek in the style of TikTok or other social media edits.
Shrek and Donkey reacted in shock before an unfamiliar female ogre popped into frame to say, "Ew, Dad." Fiona then joined the group, saying, "Oo, Mommy like." The clip ended with a little cameo from the character Pinocchio whose nose grew as he claimed not to be the one behind the edits.
The teaser confirmed the returning cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz while also welcoming Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona's daughter. The movie will reportedly be out in theaters on Christmas Day, 2026.
Fans were shocked by the teaser, with many questioning the new animation style of the characters.
In response to Pop Base's post about the teaser on X, one fan wrote, "The animation looks horrible God why can't people get one thing right," as someone else similarly commented, "Why does the animation look bad?"
"Looks like an AI parody," claimed a third, while more said, "The animation is 💔," "I do not like this animation. At all. The OG animation solidified it's unique expression and world building," and "this animation is… a choice."
But there were also some fans of the new look, with reactions like, "Nothing isn’t even wrong with the animation.. of course they would tweak it since it’s been literal years since they last made a Shrek movie," and, "The style change was a jumpscare but I like it."
"Some of y’all are really overreacting cause the animation looks so much more fluid than before, and they actually have likeness to the voice actors now which I like," said someone else.
Others noted that it's still almost two years until the movie comes out, so there will likely be changes before then.
Another detail that caught fans' eyes was the inclusion of only one of Shrek and Fiona's kids, as they had triplets in Shrek the Third, with one fan commenting, "Didn’t they have triplets? And the Animation 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾."
Fans will have to wait to learn more about the upcoming Shrek 5 as more details come out ahead of the release date.
