Shawn Mendes Seemingly Addresses Rumors About His Romantic Preferences

Shawn Mendes recently gave fans a first listen at one of his new songs, and many believe the lyrics might be referencing the longstanding rumors about his sexuality.

The "Treat You Better" singer, 26, performed on stage at a recent concert when he played his unreleased track, "The Mountain," as seen in fan-captured footage taken during the show. The video was uploaded to TikTok, where fans were left "gagged" over his apparent suggestion in the lyrics.

"Some days, I have a change of heart. You can say what you need to say," Mendes sang in the clip. "You can say I’m too young. You can I’m too old. You can say I like girls or boys. Whatever fits your mold."

After he sang the line, a clear response to the questions about his romantic preferences, fans in the audience erupted with cheers, voicing their support for Mendes, regardless of how he identifies.

However, as many users in the comments on TikTok pointed out, the lyrics didn't appear to be any sort of confirmation about his identity, but rather a commentary about the years of rumors about him.

"All I see is him taking back the narrative," one user pointed out. "He don't care what you think."

"oh he ate with that lyric," someone else applauded.

Mendes already addressed the rumors directly back in 2016, revealing in a Snapchat video, "First of all, I'm not gay. Second of all, it shouldn't matter if I was or if I wasn't."

"The focus should be on the music not my sexuality," he insisted at the time.

Mendes has also only dated women publicly, the most notable being singer Camila Cabello, whom he dated for more than two years before they ultimately called it quits.
