Sharon Stone pays tribute to iconic “Basic Instinct” scene with sexy lingerie photo: 'Basically yours'

The actress starred opposite Michael Douglas in the erotic thriller more than three decades ago.

Anyone who's seen Basic Instinct — and probably even many of those who haven't — knows about that scene.

It's the one in the 1992 erotic thriller in which Sharon Stone's character, author and suspected murderer Catherine Tramell, under interrogation by male police officers, appears to strategically uncross her legs so the audience can see, well, everything. Needless to say, Michael Douglas' Det. Nick Curran and his colleagues are left flustered.

Three decades later, Stone has recreated the moment, in a more PG way, on Instagram. The snapshot shows the actress sitting up in a chair, just like she is in what's arguably her most famous movie, with her legs crossed. This time she's wearing lingerie, jewelry, and high heels. "BASICALLY....YOURS," she captioned the post.

The throwback is somewhat unexpected, because Stone has repeatedly said she was unaware that she would be so exposed in the final cut of the film. (Director Paul Verhoeven has denied this.)

In her 2021 memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice, the Oscar-nominated actress wrote that she was tricked, and that Verhoeven hadn't warned her about what he wanted to do with the scene.

"[I was told] 'We can't see anything — I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on,'" Stone wrote. "Yes, there have been many points of view on this topic, but since I'm the one with the vagina in question, let me say: The other points of view are bulls---."

The veteran actress, now 66, wrote that she only saw the completed scene at a screening of Basic Instinct, where she sat alongside agents, lawyers, and executives — nearly all of them men.

"That was how I saw my vagina-shot for the first time," she recalled, noting that afterward, she "slapped Paul across the face."

Then again, Stone has paid tribute to the scene before, like when she incorporated it into her speech when she was named GQ's Woman of the Year in 2019. She sat in a chair on stage and explained again that she hadn't known what was happening in the moment, which "would change my life." She added, "One you might be aware of when it's happening, and one you might not."

She encouraged the audience to embrace such moments nonetheless.

"The time to decide who you are is now. The time to decide what you do with the tender, important, beautiful, savage, passionate, most important part of yourself," she said. "What are you gonna do with it? I'll tell you what I did with mine. I respected it. And I would suggest that you all do the same. Because we have every right to be powerful in whatever form of sexuality we choose to have. And no one is allowed to take that away from you."
