A Super Bowl party battle is coming to your screen for a good cause.
Shaquille O’Neal and Rob Gronkowski are hosting a “Shaq’s Fun House vs. Gronk Beach” virtual party with all proceeds going to the NAACP Empowerment Programs and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The event was meant to be an in-person party that switched to virtual with social justice causes.
“We want to be sensitive to people. That's why we wanted [it] to be labeled as ‘Party with a Purpose,’” NBA Hall of Famer O'Neal told ESPN. “There's a lot of stuff going on, and we are aware of that, and we hope to do our part. We're gonna continue to do our part.”
They announced the event Thursday morning on their social media sites with the name stemming from each of their annual Super Bowl parties. It will take place June 27 at 8 p.m. ET for free on ShaqvsGronk.com and shown on more than 20 other platforms, including LiveXLive, Facebook, Twitch and Twitter.
The event will feature the musical performances by Snoop Dogg, DaBaby, Steve Aoki, Diplo and Carnage with Shaq performing as DJ Diesel. O’Neal and Gronkowski, who also had a Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniform reveal Thursday morning, will compete in challenges with the winner donating to his respective charity.
The activities include a game of HORSE, jousting, a lip-sync battle and a chicken wing eating contest. O’Neal is playing for the Boys & Girls Club and Gronkowski for NAACP.
“So music, sports, competitions — we just knew that it was a win-win,” Gronkowski told ESPN. “And on top of it, whenever Shaq and I have the chance to come together and bring other people together — 'cause that's what we love to do, is bring everyone together, unite everyone together — we just knew it was a no-brainer to do.”
The show is three hours and DoorDash, the event’s partner, has pledged to donate one meal in partnership with Feeding America for every viewer on the livestream up to 1.25 million meals. There will be a “The General’s Fan Cam” that will feature viewers’ dance moves.
