Shania Twain Dips Back Into TV on New Cruise Ship Procedural

Following on from the success of paramedic drama 9-1-1, Ryan Murphy has a splashy new procedural premiering on ABC this fall. Doctor Odyssey will star Joshua Jackson as the onboard doctor on a luxury cruise ship, who has to navigate high-stakes medical emergencies alongside equally dramatic interpersonal dynamics.

While very few plot details have been released, Jackson offered a hint about what to expect back in May. “Ryan Murphy doesn’t write normal procedural television, so the world that this doctor lives in is going to be as over the top and outrageous as you would expect from Ryan Murphy,” he told Deadline.

Keep reading for everything we know about the show so far, including cast, guest stars (including Shania Twain!) and release date.

What is Doctor Odyssey about?

Based on the plot synopsis released by ABC, Doctor Odyssey is going to be an irresistible combination of medical drama and escapist luxury travel porn. It’ll star Joshua Jackson as Max, the newly appointed on-board doctor on “a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder.” The show will see Max and his medical team “navigating unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

Doctor Odyssey is written and executive produced by Murphy, alongside Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. Baitz has worked with Murphy on several previous projects—most recently Feud: Capote vs. The Swans—while Baker was a producer on the upcoming Murphy projects Grotesquerie and American Horror Stories.

Who is cast in Doctor Odyssey?

Joshua Jackson

Jackson is probably still best known and loved for playing Pacey Witter in Dawson’s Creek. He’s worked extensively on TV ever since, starring in Fox’s Fringe, Showtime’s The Affair, Netflix’s When They See Us and most recently the Peacock podcast adaptation Dr. Death.

Phillipa Soo

Soo first shot to fame in 2015 as one of the original cast members of Hamilton, playing Alexander Hamilton’s wife, Eliza. Since then, she’s appeared in movies including Tick, Tick…Boom! and TV shows including the acclaimed Hulu series Dopesick.

Don Johnson

Veteran TV actor Johnson played the co-lead role of James "Sonny" Crockett in the long-running 1980s series Miami Vice, and a decade later starred in another classic police procedural, Nash Bridges. His more recent projects include Django Unchained, Knives Out and HBO’s Watchmen.

Shania Twain

In the latest teaser trailer, ABC revealed a glimpse at country music star Shania Twain dancing aboard the Odyssey. According to the network, the "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" singer is the first of "many notable guests" joining the series for Season 1.

Where is Doctor Odyssey filmed?

According to the production information available online, Doctor Odyssey was filmed in Los Angeles, Calif. The show’s primary location will be the cruise ship itself, and those scenes are likely to be filmed on soundstages. Since the show takes place on a luxury cruise, it’s safe to assume that it’ll feature scenes in various exotic locations—but it’s not clear how much actual filming will take place overseas.

How many episodes are in Dr. Odyssey Season 1?

An official episode count hasn’t yet been released. Based off 9-1-1, the season could run anywhere from 10 to 18 episodes.

Is there a trailer for Dr. Odyssey?

There’s no full trailer for the show as yet, but ABC did release the first official teaser on Aug. 26.
