Country singer Shania Twain was heavily criticised for her comments in an interview, where she said if she’d been able to vote she would’ve done so for Donald Trump.

As a Canadian, the singer was unable to take part in the most recent presidential election, but decided to voice her thoughts on the current US president during the 2016 campaign.

The 52-year-old has since backtracked, apologising for "offending" anyone in a rambled Twitter explanation.

"I would like to apologise to anybody I have offended in a recent interview with the Guardian relating to the American President," she wrote. "The question caught me off guard. As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context."

Despite her claims that Trump was "offensive but honest", she went on to say that she doesn’t discriminate against anyone herself.

She had earlier said she would have voted for Trump as he was the most

"I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President," she went on.

"I was trying to explain, in response to a question about the election, that my limited understanding was that the President talked to a portion of America like an accessible person they could relate to, as he was NOT a politician".

Shania has now apologised for causing

She concluded that her answer was admittedly "awkward" but was not reflective of her values despite saying, "I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest".

But Twitter users weren’t buying what some deemed a hindsight, half-apology…

Her comments caused anger online as LGBTQI community expressed their disappointment.
