‘What?!?’: Seth Meyers Exposes Trump’s Empty Promise With A Jarring Contrast
Seth Meyers on Monday pointed out the stark difference between one of Donald Trump’s pre-election policy promises and what the president-elect is admitting now.
The “Late Night” host aired a montage of Trump on the 2024 campaign trial promising that his proposed tariffs on imported products will mean prices come down and will “make America affordable again.”
Meyers contrasted that with Trump admitting to NBC’s Kristen Welker in an interview that aired this weekend that he can’t actually guarantee that.
“What?!?” asked Meyers. “When you were campaigning, you were guaranteeing everything. ‘Prices will come down, America will be respected.’ And now that you’ve won, you’re coming off like an inspirational Instagram post.”
“Trump suddenly can’t guarantee that his policies won’t do the one thing he consistently promised not to do, and the one thing everyone said they would do, and that’s for an obvious reason,” Meyers continued.
“Tariffs raise prices. Everyone knows that,” he explained. “If you want to argue that tariffs are necessary to curtail foreign imports of stuff like cars or steel in order to boost domestic production of those things, then fine. But you can’t argue they magically lower prices when they do the opposite.”
Meyers then took a turn. “Why the hell am I explaining this? No one cares,” he said, before joking as a Trump voter: “Oh, I think we made a mistake. I think we did.”
