The year's most fun red carpet is here.

The most predictable thing about the MTV Video Music Awards is that it's the most unpredictable red carpet you'll see all year. The Oscars have their clout and the Golden Globes are known for laughs and libations, but the VMAs are all about having fun—and that extends off the storied stage to the red carpet, which has included everything from Lil' Kim in a purple wig and one breast on display to Destiny's Child in coordinating outfits and (who can forget) Lady Gaga arriving in a dress made of beef.

This time around, presenters, nominees, and guests alike all turned up and turned out at UBS Arena for the 40th anniversary of the VMAs—the first show was at Radio City Music Hall on September 14, 1984, and featured Madonna performing "Like a Virgin" in a wedding gown. With big names like Katy Perry already guaranteed a Moon Person trophy and MTV introducing awards like Song of Summer, Best Group, and Best Trending Video that can only be voted on via social media, there's no telling what the winner's circle will look like this year. With names like Taylor Swift, SZA, Ariana Grande, and Megan Thee Stallion all vying for gold tonight, the only place everyone can call themselves a winner is on the carpet.
