The Secret Ingredient for Making a Perfect Copycat McFlurry at Home Make McFlurry
The McDonald's McFlurry is a fan-favorite dessert thanks to its balance of smooth soft-serve vanilla ice cream and crunchy toppings that deliver a satisfying mix of textures and flavors. While people love this sweet, creamy dessert, they also love to joke about how often they can't get one because McDonald's ice cream machines are infamous for frequent breakdowns. While this leaves customers disappointed, it's also a long-running joke as a shared cultural experience.
The McFlurry is made by blending soft-serve ice cream with toppings, like M&Ms or Oreos, in a cup using a specialized spoon that doubles as a mixing tool. While this process is quick and efficient, if the ice cream machines are out of commission, you're out of luck!
If this frustrates you, too, content creator @momlifewithlaura has you covered! "No need to get upset when the ice cream machine is down at McDonald’s! Now you can make your very own McFlurry at home!" Laura said in the caption of her Instagram video. We're listening.

Ingredients for Making a Copycat McDonald's M&M McFlurry
I have tried to make these at home, but I never could get the consistency of a McDonald's McFlurry. Laura's recipe added an ingredient I had never tried in my homemade McFlurries, though—Cool Whip! Would it be the key to DIY McFlurry success?
The full recipe called for vanilla ice cream, Cool Whip, milk and mini M&M’s (check out Laura's post for amounts) and there were only two steps involved to create this McFlurry dupe, so I had to try it.

How to Make a Copycat McDonald's M&M McFlurry
To make this McFlurry, I just added all of the ingredients to a blender and blended until it was smooth. Because my blender doubles as a cup, I left the homemade McFlurry in that and topped it with whipped cream and more M&M’s and dug in!
This tasted just like a McDonald's M&M McFlurry! It was thick and creamy (but still soft) with that little extra kick of sweetness, thanks to the Cool Whip. I prefer when the McFlurry melts a little bit so I can drink it, and this homemade version melted a little faster than the McDonald's McFlurry does, so I was able to enjoy it sooner.
Laura said that if you don't want the M&Ms blended in, you can blend the other ingredients without them and then simply stir the M&Ms in so that they remain whole, or just put them on top. You can also add more milk if you want it thinner.

Variations For This McFlurry
The great thing about this dupe is that you can customize it any way you want, and you don't have to rely on what's available at your local McDonald's.
I would love to make a Butterfinger McFlurry or an Oreo McFlurry and top it with some M&Ms to mix and match the flavors. For something more seasonal, you can blend in candy cane pieces and top with chocolate chips for a Chocolate Peppermint McFlurry!
Plus, a McDonald's McFlurry costs around $4.50 for a Medium. With this recipe, I can make four medium McFlurries for around $14, based on the cost of ingredients near me. That breaks down to around $3.50 per McFlurry.
