My youngest just turned 5, and since I home school him for pre-school, I am always on the hunt for easy recipes that not only can he help with, but learn from too! Cooking is a terrific way to have kids learn about colors, patterns, counting, shapes, fractions and more, without even realizing it.

Do your little ones ever read Highlights Magazine? Yep, the one we loved as kids is still around, and just as great as ever! In fact, they have one geared towards younger kids, High Five, which my little guy looks forward to every single month. As soon as it hits our mailbox, he wants to read the stories, find all the hidden pictures and see what recipe they are sharing this month. That is how we came across this great idea for a fun Halloween-inspired treat he could really get creative with.

These Monster Cookies are adorable and super simple! They would be perfect for a kids' party too, letting them each decorate a few of their own. I happened to have a canister of white frosting on hand, so I started with that. For the colors, I found some pre-made pouches of cookie icing in the baking aisle. These are more of a royal icing, and need a little time to set, FYI. If you're using all canned icing, just transfer them all to piping bags or plastic bags with the tips cut off for easy decorating.
