Saoirse Ronan marries “Mary Queen of Scots ”costar Jack Lowden in secret Scotland ceremony

The couple, who tied the knot in Edinburgh, initially sparked dating rumors in 2018.

Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden have officially tied the knot after six years of dating.

The Mary Queen of Scots costars — listed as Saoirse Una Ronan and Jack Andrew Lowden —  said their vows in an Edinburgh ceremony, per Scottish civil marriage registry records viewed by Entertainment Weekly.

According to the Irish Independent, the "low-key" ceremony took place last weekend at Edinburgh Central Registrar’s Office and involved "only a handful of the couple’s closest friends." The outlet added that "all the guests were sworn to secrecy."

Representatives for Ronan and Lowden did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.

This news comes months after the couple first sparked engagement rumors in October, when Ronan, 30, was spotted wearing a diamond ring at a Louis Vuitton fashion show in Paris.

The four-time Oscar nominee, who made her acting debut at just 9 years old, has long been private about her personal life. She and Lowden, 34, first met on the set of their 2018 film Mary Queen of Scots, which saw Ronan take on the role of the former Queen of Scotland while Lowden played her second husband, Henry Darnley. The film also starred Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I.

While promoting the film, Lowden spoke highly of Ronan during a December 2018 interview for the BUILD series, saying, "It was remarkable working with Saoirse."

He added, "The woman is a force of nature on and off screen, and utterly fearless and a brilliant leader as well. For being 24 years old, it's just constantly amazing to me, not just her work but how she is on a set is amazing.”

Later that month, rumors of their on set romance emerged online.

The couple rarely comment on their relationship, though Lowden occasionally shares photos of them together on Instagram. Just last month, the Slow Horses actor shared a snap of the pair cuddling while attending Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England.

The couple, who share a home in Islington, North London, recently collaborated on Ronan’s upcoming release, The Outrun, for which they both serve as producers and Ronan also stars. Commenting on their partnership, Ronan told PEOPLE in 2022 that she and Lowden "have very similar tastes."

"So I completely trust his eye," she added at the time. "And I know when he says something's working, it really is, because he doesn't ever sugarcoat anything. So I think that really helps, having someone that you really trust. And he's a sort of typical Scot, where if there's a problem, he's the first one to try and solve it."
