Sally Nugent announced as Louise Minchin's replacement on 'BBC Breakfast'

BBC Breakfast has announced Sally Nugent as a permanent anchor following the departure of Louise Minchin in September.

The television journalist will be the regular presenter from Monday to Wednesday, appearing alongside Dan Walker, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt with immediate effect.

Nugent has been part of the BBC Breakfast team for almost a decade as a sports presenter and has been a journalist for 25 years. She celebrated the news on her Instagram account with a post from MediaCity, Salford saying: "Let's get started".

In a statement shared by the BBC, the presenter added: "I’m absolutely thrilled to become the new presenter of BBC Breakfast and bring the nation the latest news, top entertainment guests and stories that matter every week.

"It’s an honour to take the reins from Louise and be part of the UK’s most watched breakfast show."

Co-host Dan Walker was quick to sing Nugent's praises on Twitter, describing her as a "brilliant presenter, massively popular with the team, an excellent journalist and a great friend."

BBC Breakfast editor Richard Frediani said: “Sally has an impressive track record as an award winning broadcast journalist and has secured a series of high profile exclusive interviews in recent years. We are delighted to have her take her new permanent place in the studio alongside Dan, Charlie and Naga.”

Earlier this year Nugent won the Scoop of the Year award at the 2021 Royal Television Society Journalism Awards, for her interview with Marcus Rashford MBE about his quest to end child food poverty.

The 50-year-old presenter started her media career at BBC Radio Merseyside, before moving on to read sport on BBC North West Tonight.

She joined BBC News in 2003, and later joined BBC Breakfast in 2011 filling in when the regular hosts were on holiday or unavailable.

Louise Minchin stepped down from BBC Breakfast in September after 20 years on the BBC's flagship morning news programme.
