Royals at Wimbledon Through the Years: From Princess Margaret in 1970 to Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte in 2024

The Championships, Wimbledon, has long been the site where royals from all over the world flock to see the best players in tennis compete in one of the most prestigious tournaments of the season. For decades, members of the British royal family have watched matches in the Royal Box and even handed out a few trophies.

For the 2024 Men’s Singles Final between Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Carlos Alcaraz of Spain on July 14, Kate Middleton made a rare public appearance since revealing she was undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis. She attended wearing a purple dress from British brand Safiyaa alongside her daughter Princess Charlotte. Middleton presented the winning trophy to Alcaraz.

Meghan Markle, 2018

In 2018, Kate, then the Duchess of Cambridge, was joined by her sister-in-law Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Meghan Markle wore wide-leg cream trousers with a blue and white striped shirt by Ralph Lauren for the occasion, while Kate fashioned a Jenny Packham dress that featured a polka dot pattern evocative of tennis balls.

In 2010, the late Queen Elizabeth II surprised Wimbledon attendees by attending the second round match for the Men’s Singles tournament to watch Sir Andy Murray play on Centre Court. The long-reigning monarch wore a light blue and white ensemble complete with a coordinated hat.

Princess Diana, 1995

Princess Diana wholly embraced her power suit era when she attended Wimbledon in 1995 alongside the Prince of Kent. Diana fashioned a monochrome skirt suit look and accessorized with pearl earrings and a matching necklace.

Princess Margaret, 1970

In 1970, Princess Margaret, sister of the late Queen Elizabeth II, attended the Women’s Singles final and was on hand to present the trophy to champion Margaret Court. Princess Margaret embraced whimsical design for her ensemble, adding a statement headband to her look.
