The royal family have celebrated Prince Philip’s 98th birthday by sharing adorable throwback snaps across social media.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were among the first to post their well wishes, sharing four photos of the prince including one of their young family laughing on Buckingham Palace’s famous balcony.

They captioned their post: “Wishing a very Happy 98th Birthday to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh!”

In a separate post, Prince Harry and Meghan referred to Philip as ‘Grandpa’ on their birthday message, with an image of Harry and the duke.

“Wishing His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Sir, Grandpa a very Happy 98th Birthday!” the pair’s caption read.

The Sussexes also included an old black and white photo of the Queen and Prince Philip dancing together.

Prince Charles shared a personal photo with his father, taken in Malta in 1951, when he was just two years old, on Clarence House’s Instagram page.

Princess Eugenie posted some sweet throwback photos with her grandfather - one on Christmas Day with his hand on his granddaughter’s head and two at Trooping the Colour.

She captioned it: “Happy Birthday to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. I found a couple of classic photographs of Grandpa and I on Christmas Day and Trooping the Colour a few years ago now...”

The Royal Family were out in force on Saturday to attend the annual Trooping the Colour parade, to mark the Queen’s official birthday.

The Duke of Edinburgh was not present on the famous balcony at Buckingham Palace, as he retired from public duties aged 96 in 2017, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

The Duchess of Sussex made her first public appearance since giving birth to baby Archie last month and Prince Louis also made his Trooping the Colour debut.

It’s understood that Prince Philip will be celebrating his special day in private with family.

He was born on June 10, 1921 in Greece, to parents Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

After being educated in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939, aged 18.

Philip met the then Princess Elizabeth in 1934, when she was 13. The pair kept in touch by letter and their engagement was announced in July 1947, with the wedding taking place in the November.

He left active military service in 1952 when Elizabeth ascended the throne and was by her side, supporting her with her royal duties until his retirement.

Philip is said to divide his time between the Queen’s Sandringham estate and Windsor and still enjoys his favourite hobby - carriage driving.

Aside from a hip replacement in 2018, he is said to be in good health.

The Queen and the Duke have four children together - Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

They also have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
