Royals could be set to make reality TV debut

Could this be the year that royalty takes to reality TV?

The Producers of UK’s Strictly Come Dancing, certainly hope so, as they have their sights on enlisting members of the royal family for next season’s lineup.

The show – which follows a similar format to Australia’s Dancing With the Stars – sees celebrities take to the stage and dance different ballroom styles each week with a professional until only one couple remains as the winner.

So who’s on the wish list? Well, there are talks that the BBC are interested in three royals in particular: Zara Phillips, her husband Mike Tindall, and Sarah Ferguson the Duchess of York.

Perhaps the inspiration to bring royals on as contestants came after Prince Edward’s wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex and daughter Lady Louise Windsor, were spotted among the audience last season.

But whether they will take up the offer or not is unknown given it’s not exactly usual royal protocol. However, despite this, the network reportedly has high hopes.

“Strictly is a proper family show and hugely respected, so bosses think it wouldn’t be a problem for a royal to take to the dance floor,” a source explained to The Mirror UK.

Another thing the producers have on their side is that, “The show’s celebrity booker is good pals with Mike,” according to the source.

Yet given that Zara Phillips is the daughter of Princess Anne and the Queen’s eldest granddaughter, she has a lot of responsibility to uphold her high-status reputation, so encouraging her to enter the glitzy dancing scene might be harder than producers thought.

Meanwhile, Fergie could be the smarter choice as she is more removed from the royal family following her divorce from Prince Andrew.

We all know that she would be a crowd favourite but as her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie remain in the royal spotlight, it could be unlikely that she will choose to go through with it.

The BBC is yet to confirm or deny whether they have made any progress with this as a spokesperson has said, “We don’t comment on speculation and the line-up will be announced in due course.”
