Robert Irwin Shares Unfiltered Opinion of Meeting Prince William

Prince William is focusing on the importance of wildlife conservation during his current visit to South Africa, and one prominent expert in the field—Australian conservationist Robert Irwin—is praising the royal for his efforts.

Before meeting with the president of South Africa on Tuesday, Nov.  5, the Prince of Wales, 42, met with Irwin, 20, to discuss the legacy of his father, the late Steve Irwin, while taking a nature walk on Signal Hill, as Hello! reported.

"You can instantly tell that passion the rangers and volunteers have here on the ground here at Signal Hill rubs off on everyone," Irwin, who was announced as an Earthshot Global Ambassador earlier this year, said after his stroll with the Prince.

Irwin continued, "You just can’t help but fall in love with this place. Prince William, myself and everyone here have certainly fallen in love with Cape Town. It's a beautiful location and the conservation work is being done here, it just fills my heart with hope."

"I really loved having a conversation with Prince William about the importance of support for rangers," he added.

"They are on the front line of conservation and you have to remember that these days conservation can be a dangerous business. And it's really nice to know that Prince William is ensuring rangers are valued and they get the resources and the support they need. Very encouraging steps in the right direction. It’s great that William is putting himself behind this. Protecting the environment is about protecting people too."

In September, Prince William named Irwin an Earthshot Global Ambassador, and the young conservationist took to social media to announce his prestigious new title.

"My entire life has been centered around conservation and continuing an important legacy that my dad and my family started," Robert said in a clip uploaded to Instagram platforms on Sept. 3. "And it's given me a real deep appreciation for the need to repair and restore our ecosystems."

He added, "The Earthshot Prize does such a great job at not only creating that really broad, large scale societal and environmental change, but it also supports the on-the-ground initiatives, the cutting-edge technology, the most passionate individuals and organizations. Being an Earthshot Prize Ambassador means I'll get to take you guys along on the journey as we find out what some of the Earthshot Finalists are doing.
