Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler's close friendship is still going strong after all these years.

While supporting Sandler at the New York City premiere of his new Netflix comedy special Adam Sandler: Love You on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Schneider, 60, spoke to PEOPLE about how the Murder Mystery 2 star, 57, has been a steadfast friend to him.

"There's not been a week in 30 years where he doesn't check in on me. I mean, that's true. No matter where I am in the world, I'll get a phone call, sometimes in the middle of the night," Schneider says. "He called me from Italy, [and said], 'What are you doing?' I go, 'It's two o'clock in the morning.' 'Well get up. I need to talk to you. Are you good?' "

The pair, who first met in the 1980s while both working to become comedians, have also been longtime collaborators onscreen. They first starred alongside each other in The Waterboy in 1998, and went on to appear in more than a dozen other movies together.

Schneider praised Sandler for bringing him on board for so many of his big projects.

"We've been friends for five decades now. He's a special cat, and for him to include me in all this stuff ever is just, it's incredible," the Dead Wrong actor tells PEOPLE. "I mean, I really, I don't have any words to say except I love him and I just want him to be healthy, happy, successful. He's just incredible."

"And he's doing Happy Gilmore 2," he adds. "How amazing is that?"

When asked if he will be joining his longtime collaborator in the follow-up to the 1996 golf comedy, Schneider teases, "We'll see."

As Schneider reflected on Sandler's flourishing career, he tipped his hat to his friend's success, saying, "He's just getting started."

"It's beautiful. Him doing Hustle was great, and Uncut Gems is great. ... He's working with really, really talented people," continues Schneider, who recently made headlines for his fractured relationship with his daughter, Elle King.

"He's got a new movie coming out with George Clooney for Netflix. It's been a wonderful, great experience for him and a great deal for Netflix to get the biggest movie star in the world on there," he adds, referring to Sandler's ongoing partnership with the streaming platform.

At Thursday's premiere, Sandler spoke enthusiastically to PEOPLE about making the long-awaited Happy Gilmore sequel.

"I'm more than excited, probably the most excited I've been in many years to shoot something," he says. "We worked hard trying to write something that we thought people would have a good time with."

Netflix confirmed on May 15 that Sandler is teaming up with the streamer for the sequel. Months later, during an Aug. 20 appearance on The Tonight Show, the 50 First Dates star revealed that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will be among a number of athletes to make cameos in the forthcoming film.

"We didn't want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time, 'Do Happy Gilmore 2,' and I was always like, 'Nah, I'll only let you down,' " Sandler said at the time. "But then me and my buddy Tim Herlihy, we came up with this idea, we're really excited about it, we wrote our asses off, we're continuing to try to make it a movie that you guys will like and I think it's — we're excited. So many golfers are being nice and they're going to be a part of it and all."
