Richard Simmons' staff reveals his final photo and message to fans: 'We thought you'd want to see it'

The fitness guru died on July 13 of natural causes.

Richard Simmons has one final message for the world.

On Saturday, the staff of the late celebrity fitness icon took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the last social media post he'd planned to publish before his death on July 13.

“Richard worked very hard on his posts for you,” read the message from Simmons’ team. “He had many ideas and would work ahead… going back to each one making changes until he had it just like he wanted before posting.”

The post continued, “As you know, on the weekends, he would just share a photo with a caption. He always chose his photos and wrote his captions for the upcoming weekend by Friday. So we have the post Richard planned to share with you last Sunday.  We thought you’d want to see it.”

The final tweet in the thread shared the post and photo Simmons had planned for Sunday, July 14. In the photo, he is smiling in an orange NASA space suit under the caption, "Let me fly you to the moon so we can gaze among the stars. Love, Richard."

On July 13, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call from Simmons’ housekeeper, reported ABC News. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police told the outlet he seemed to have died from “natural causes” and that no foul play is suspected.

His longtime publicist Tom Estey confirmed his death to Entertainment Weekly, saying, "The world lost an angel today."

Simmons’ brother Lenny later told EW that he was laid to rest on July 19 in Los Angeles. "Our beloved Dicky was laid to rest this morning surrounded by only family and closest friends," he confirmed in a statement. “We pray for your continued love and support during this very difficult time."

The day before, the fitness guru had celebrated his 76th birthday and thanked fans for their birthday wishes in a post shared across his socials. "Thank you… I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life!" he wrote. "I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday."

Simmons also addressed his birthday in his final interview with PEOPLE, in which he reflected on his decades-long career, including his recent retreat from the public eye.

"I am grateful that I'm here, that I am alive for another day," he told the outlet. "I'll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people."
