Sometimes the best ‘holidays’ are the quick breaks you can take between the work week to de-stress and unwind, especially if you don’t have to travel too far from home at all.

If a staycation is exactly what the doctor ordered, then the newly revamped The Star Grand Hotel and Residences in Sydney is for you.

It’s the ultimate place for a quick weekend getaway that requires little to no effort on your part.

Where to stay

The Star’s Astral Towers have been rebranded to The Star Grand Hotel and Residences after undergoing more than $100 million in upgrading the rooms and suites across the properties.

Now, it’s not often you walk into a hotel and immediately want to stop and pull our your phone but the new Grand Foyer truly is a sight.

Featuring the world’s first permanent indoor light and interactive digital art foyer it’s no wonder crowds of people stop and stare on their way through the huge space.

The 25-metre, 8K resolution crescent-shaped screen, showcases works of Australian artists, university students, cinematographers and animators.

Beside the digital canvas is the first sculptural water installation of its design in the Southern Hemisphere: the ‘Aquatique’ artwork of falling water.

The rooms have also all been updated featuring the latest in lighting and room control technology - the responsive lighting is perfect if you ever have to get out of bed in the middle of the night.

The king size bed is as comfortable as any mid to high scale hotel room. The luxurious bedding is exclusive to The Star Entertainment Group properties and there is a deluxe pillow menu to make things even more comfortable if needed.

Also, having the extra lounge and sitting area in the King Superior rooms means there is plenty of space for you to spread out.

Where to eat

Once you’re all settled in to your hotel room it’s time to choose where to eat dinner.

Like we said above, sometimes you don’t want to have to leave the hotel, which is why The Star’s integrated resort is perfect.

Winner of Restaurant of the Year (Deluxe Hotels) and Chef of the year in 2018 and 2017 respectively, BLACK Bar & Grill is a great place to start.

You certainly won’t leave this place hungry, with some of the best quality steaks you will ever try to choose from. Add to that seafood, roast duck, and an encyclopaedic wine list and you’ll probably have a hard time choosing what to eat.

We couldn’t look past the 42-day dry aged David Blackmore Wagyu. It’s pricey but something you have to try at least once in your life.

If you still have room for dessert, we tried the chocolate warm couverture ganache - that melts as the waiter pours hot chocolate over the top - and the crème brûlée and can definitely recommend both.

But if a steak house isn’t you’re thing The Star also recently introduced three new food and beverage offerings to its already 22-strong portfolio, with the opening of signature seafood restaurant Flying Fish, boutique hotel lobby bar G&Tea and a new bar, Jade Rabbit.

For breakfast we couldn’t look past the Harvest Buffet. Known for its decadent dessert bar, which includes three chocolate fountain. It also puts on an amazing breakfast spread. And yes the three chocolate fountains are there in the morning as well.

What to do

If you don’t want to spend the rest of the time lounging around in your hotel room - which is also totally acceptable for a weekend getaway - there are so many things to do at The Star.

Of course you can spend some time soaking up the bright lights and hustle and bustle of the casino, maybe you’ll even get lucky and win back the money for last night’s dinner!

But if that’s too much excitement then The Darling Spa is the place to be. It is one of the finest and most luxurious spas in Sydney, featuring 11 treatment rooms, a Moroccan Hammam chamber, steam room, and Jacuzzi.

There is a comprehensive range of face and body treatments available to leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed from head to toe. We got to experience the Li’Tya Kodo Massage, which is exclusive to The Darling Spa, and it definitely delivered on that promise.

If retail therapy is more your thing, the hotel’s new retail precinct will have you sorted.

Regardless of what you choose to do to fill your time... this is the end result:
