Reports: Title IX complaint played role in ex-Texas Tech QB's inability to enroll at Central Michigan

Former Texas Tech quarterback Jett Duffey is still looking for a transfer destination.

Duffey was set to transfer to Central Michigan for the 2020 season. But he’s been denied admission. And according to multiple reports, a Title IX complaint from his time at Texas Tech contributed to the denial.

From Central Michigan Life:

A second Title IX complaint against Duffey, which occurred while he was at Texas Tech in 2019, was a factor in CMU's decision to end its dialogue with the quarterback. A female student at the university said Duffey sexually assaulted her while she was incapacitated. The case ended in mediation, or as they described it, "voluntary resolution." Duffey was not suspended from team activities.

ESPN confirmed the 2019 complaint played a role. That complaint came after a Texas Tech Title IX panel ruled in 2017 that he committed two counts of sexual assault against an incapacitated woman. Duffey served a team suspension after the Title IX ruling but was never criminally charged regarding that allegation.

His lawyer told ESPN that Duffey was cleared of “any Title IX allegations” by Texas Tech.

"Jett is a talented football player, an excellent student, and he deserves a chance to continue his college playing career," Lanehart told ESPN. "He has consistently maintained his innocence of allegations of misconduct, and has been cleared by Texas Tech of any Title IX allegations."

Duffey previously committed to Tulane

Duffey’s choice of Central Michigan was his second of the offseason. He committed to Tulane in January. But he backed out of that commitment two days later. Per NOLA.com, he was denied academic entry at Tulane.

Duffey played in 10 games at Texas Tech in 2019 and started the last eight. He was 239-of-367 passing for 2,840 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 212 yards and a score in coach Matt Wells’ first season with the team.

Central Michigan has been on the market for a quarterback with QB David Moore suspended through the middle of the 2020 season after testing positive for a banned substance. Last year’s starting quarterback, Quinten Dormady, was a senior.
