Yahoo Lifestyle Report: 'Shakeup' could be coming to Sean McVay's staff with Rams
The Los Angeles Rams lost to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night on a last-second field goal from Robbie Gould. It meant the reigning NFC champions were officially eliminated from the postseason this year.
And it left coach Sean McVay sick — and likely making changes to his staff.
Report: Expect shakeup
NFL.com reporter Michael Silver spent time with McVay and the Rams after the loss. Silver wrote, “Multiple sources expect there to be a shakeup on McVay's coaching staff, perhaps including veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. There could also be significant turnover in the personnel department.”
McVay and general manager Les Snead got contract extensions at the start of training camp, and are signed through 2023. So unless team owner Stan Kroenke is willing to eat a lot of salary by firing one or both of those men, it will be on McVay and Snead to remake the Rams, nearly from top to bottom.
But it won’t be easy: After trading for cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Los Angeles doesn’t have a first-down pick in 2020 or 2021, and contract extensions for several top players currently mean there’s not a lot of cap space. But running back Todd Gurley, Silver wrote, could be a cap casualty because of his salary and declining production (he’s started every game this season, but his yards per carry is just 3.9, a full yard under his 4.9 average from 2018).
McVay said the loss to San Francisco and the Rams’ results this season “all makes me sick.”
