Yahoo Lifestyle Mets have no new positive coronavirus tests, will resume play Tuesday
The New York Mets are returning to play. The team has not experienced any additional positive coronavirus tests after two members of the organization tested positive last Thursday. Because of that, the team will resume play Tuesday, MLB confirmed.
The Mets will resume their season with a doubleheader against the Miami Marlins. The team was slated to play the Marlins in Miami last Thursday, but that game was postponed due to the Mets’ positives tests. The Mets will serve as the home team during Game 1 of the doubleheader. The Marlins will act as the home team in Game 2.
The Mets are also scheduled for games against the Marlins on Wednesday and Thursday. Those games will be played as normal.
After that, the Mets will play the New York Yankees for the weekend series. The Mets were slated to play the Yankees last weekend, but that series was also postponed due to the Mets’ positive coronavirus tests. To make up those games, the Yankees and Mets will play doubleheaders Aug. 28 and Aug. 30. The teams will make up the third game of the series Sept. 3.
Mets returning to play shortly after positive tests
The Mets are returning to play after missing just four games. That schedule is similar to the one followed by the Cincinnati Reds, who missed three games in August after a player tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, those teams did not experience any new positive coronavirus tests after the first batch.
That wasn’t the case with the Marlins or St. Louis Cardinals earlier in the year. Both teams lost at least a week of games due to coronavirus. Both the Marlins and Cardinals experienced additional positive tests following their first batch of positives, which kept both teams out longer than the Mets and Reds.
MLB has updated its coronavirus protocols multiple times since the Marlins became the first team to deal with a coronavirus outbreak.
