Jets trade Jamal Adams to Seahawks for two first-round picks

The New York Jets won’t keep safety Jamal Adams around after all. The team finally dealt Adams on Saturday, sending him to the Seattle Seahawks.

In exchange for Adams, the Jets received a first-round pick in both the 2021 and 2022 NFL drafts, a 2021 third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald. The Seahawks also received a 2022 fourth-round pick.

While Adams is being traded, he’s not going to his dream destination. In June, Adams — who is from Texas — told a Dallas Cowboys fan he was “trying to” get to Dallas.

Jamal Adams and the Jets have been at odds this offseason

It’s been a tumultuous offseason for Adams and the team. The 24-year-old Adams has publicly expressed frustration with the organization, criticizing the team for not giving him an extension and questioning head coach Adam Gase’s leadership abilities.

In three seasons in the NFL, Adams has emerged as one of the best safeties in the game. He’s made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons, and is coming off his first All-Pro selection. Adams is under contract through the 2021 season.

“This trade provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our team with multiple first-round picks in each of the next two years and the flexibility to continue to build this team for the future,” Jets general manager Joe Douglas said in a statement. “Adding Bradley McDougald’s consistency and production to this year’s team was an important piece that gives us more experience on defense. While we had maintained our interest in Jamal Adams having a long and successful career with the Jets, we know it’s important to be prepared and willing to adjust to new offers and circumstances. As I have always said, my job is to listen to calls and this offer was one we could not ignore.”

The underlying drama of the trade didn’t stop Adams from posting a thank you note to Jets fans after the trade was announced.

Players’ reaction to the trade

Several NFL players, and an NFC West team, weighed in on Adams’ trade.

Le’Veon Bell speaks out

Jets running back Le’Veon Bell responded to Adams’ trade with a rebuke for his former teammate.

Adams eventually took notice of his now-former teammate’s Twitter activity.

And, of course, Bell had a response.
