Report: Jamal Adams will play for Seahawks on existing contract after Jets trade

Safety Jamal Adams has a new home with the Seattle Seahawks after the New York Jets traded him, but he’ll be playing on the same contract he originally signed with Jets.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Adams and the Seahawks agreed that he would play out the 2020 season on his 2017 rookie deal. The Seahawks and Adams reportedly agreed to this before the trade was finalized. According to NFL Network’s Kevin Patra, Adams, 24, will make about $3.59 million in 2020, and $9.86 million in 2021.

Adams, Jets didn’t see eye to eye

Adams’ trade to the Seahawks isn’t surprising because he let everyone know he wanted out of New York. The detail that he’ll reportedly play on his current contract was surprising. One of Adams’ main complaints this offseason was that the Jets didn’t give him an extension. He told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News last week that GM Joe Douglas lied to him about discussing a future extension.

The change of scenery could be one of the reasons Adams agreed to a trade without an immediate extension. In addition to his problems with Douglas, Adams told Mehta during their interview that he has significant issues with Jets head coach Adam Gase.

“I don’t feel like he’s the right leader for this organization to reach the Promised Land,” Adams told Mehta. “As a leader, what really bothers me is that he doesn’t have a relationship with everybody in the building.

“At the end of the day, he doesn’t address the team. If there’s a problem in the locker room, he lets another coach address the team. If we’re playing sh---y and we’re losing, he doesn’t address the entire team as a group at halftime. He’ll walk out of the locker room and let another coach handle it.”

That kind of says it all, doesn’t it? Adams doesn’t respect the head coach, he feels lied to by the GM, and getting out of that situation might have been a higher priority than securing a contract extension. And as an added bonus, he’s now playing for a likely playoff contender instead of the perennially struggling Jets.
