Report: Heat to retire Dwyane Wade's jersey Feb. 22 vs. Cavaliers

The Miami Heat will retire Dwyane Wade’s No. 3 jersey on Feb. 22, per a report by the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman.

The Heat are hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers that day at American Airlines Arena. Per Winderman, the team is planning for “a more reserved ceremony” at the Saturday game with a celebration of Wade the night before at the arena.

Miami plays at the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 20 and has Friday, Feb. 21, open. They play an afternoon home game that following Sunday.

The Sun Sentinel reported, based on TickPick, that ticket prices for the game have already shot up. The average ticket price is $183.60, up from $95 the day before, and seats behind the Heat bench are going for $1,356.

When Wade’s jersey is retired, he’ll become the fifth player in franchise history to see his number go up. He’ll join Alonzo Mourning’s No. 33 (retired in March 2009), Tim Hardaway’s No. 10 (October 2009), Shaquille O’Neal’s No. 32 (December 2016) and Chris Bosh’s No. 1 (March 2019).

Michael Jordan’s No. 23 was retired by the Heat in 2003, though he never played for them.

Bosh, Wade and LeBron James took the Heat to four consecutive NBA Finals from 2011-14, winning it all in ’12 and ’13. Wade also won an NBA championship with the Heat in 2006 alongside O’Neal and Mourning.

The 2003 No. 5 overall draft pick, Wade spent 16 years in the league, the majority of which were in Miami until he left in 2016 via free agency. He returned to close his career there.

His No. 3 is also retired by Marquette. That ceremony was in 2006.
